ALBINISM 2

ART INSTALLATION
At Zona Maco

This is a collaborative project between Art Comes First and photographer Denise Ariana Pérez, merging fashion, art, and cultural storytelling to highlight the experiences of individuals with albinism in Africa. Presented at Zona Maco in February 2020—one of the most prestigious contemporary art fairs in Latin America—this installation served as a platform for awareness, representation, and dialogue.

Albinism in Africa is often surrounded by deep-rooted myths, stigma, and discrimination. Individuals with the condition frequently face social exclusion, limited access to education, and even violent persecution due to widespread superstitions and misconceptions. This installation was designed not only to showcase thought provoking artistry but to amplify the voices of those often marginalized, challenging viewers to confront these realities through visual storytelling.

At the heart of the installation was the compelling work of Denise Ariana Pérez, whose photography captures the raw beauty, resilience, and humanity of an albino community in Africa. Through her lens, she invites audiences to look beyond the condition and see the dignity, individuality, and strength of those she documents.

Art Comes First commisioned this project as well as designed a custom clothing collection that complemented the themes of the exhibition, reinforcing the idea that fashion and art are not just aesthetic expressions, but powerful tools for change. The ACF designed and curated installation blurred the lines between wearable storytelling, visual activism, and spatial design, creating an immersive experience that asked viewers to engage, reflect, and question the social structures that perpetuate these injustices.

By bringing this conversation to Zona Maco, the project sought to bridge cultural gaps, challenge perceptions, and celebrate the beauty of diversity in all its forms.
